Mulch Tips

Mulch Tips
Dirt Guy produces native double-ground mulch for the landscaping and nursery industries. The landscaping mulch is a hardwood/softwood blend, the by-product of local tree clearing and tree removal. The net result is a recycled product that decorates the yard and prevents weeds. It contains no stump grindings or demolition material, pallets or other fillers, and it is a quality product that is shredded to a mix of various sizes and ready to use.
With Dirt Guy's tips in your pocket, you’ll be ready to confidently and effectively purchase and apply your mulch.
Start by applying a layer of mulch that is two to three inches deep. Be careful not to apply too much because that can create a favorable environment for pests and diseases while limiting oxygen availability to the roots. You see proof of this when you see a tree wither and die when it is flooded with too much water that blocks air to the roots.
Mulch volcanoes are when trees have mulch piled up in a cone around the trunk. You should always keep the mulch from coming into direct contact with the tree trunk. Leave a small gap around the base of the tree to prevent moisture buildup and potential rot.
Extend the mulch out to the tree's drip line, mimicking the tree's natural canopy. This wider coverage ensures that the entire root system benefits from the mulching process, promoting optimal tree health.
To ensure you apply mulch correctly and avoid mulch volcanoes, follow these step-by-step instructions:
Step 1: Clear Existing Mulch
Before adding fresh mulch, gently rake and remove any existing mulch that has accumulated over time. This step helps maintain the appropriate depth and prevents excessive buildup. Weed all of the area so it is free of any unwanted growth prior to mulching.
Step 2: Measure the Mulch Depth
Using a garden rake or similar tool, spread the fresh mulch around the area in an even layer. Aim for a depth of two to three inches, ensuring the mulch is spread evenly.
Step 3: Create a Mulch-Free Zone
Take care to keep the mulch a few inches away from any tree trunks. Leave a small gap around the base of the tree to prevent moisture buildup and potential rot. This mulch-free zone helps maintain a healthy environment for the tree.
Step 4: Extend the Mulch to the Drip Line
Regularly monitor the mulch depth and adjust as needed. Over time, mulch may break down or decompose, reducing its effectiveness. Maintain the two-to-three-inch depth by periodically adding a fresh layer of mulch.
